Duquesne 92, GW 67
PITTSBURGH — Shawn James had 21 points, seven rebounds and five blocks as the Dukes (13-5, 3-2 A-10) won their 13th game in a season for the first time in 14 years, beating the Colonials (5-10, 1-4) last night.
James, who missed Wednesday’s win over St. Bonaventure due to a knee injury, finished with a season-high in points and raised his career block total to 403. He is the 18th player in NCAA Division I history to record at least 400 blocks.
Kojo Mensah added 13 points for Duquesne, which hadn’t won 13 games since going 17-13 and making the NIT in 1993-94.
Wynton Witherspoon had 17 points and Rob Diggs 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Colonials, who lost their fourth straight.
Utilizing the 10-man rotation that features two units of five playing roughly equal minutes in a high-tempo, pressing style, Duquesne seized control of the game early and never really let up. The Dukes opened the game on a 22-8 run and added a 20-9 run midway through the first half.
The Colonials, who have lost eight in a row on the road, did not convert a field goal during a seven-minute span in the first half. Duquesne led 53-32 at the break.
UNC Wilmington 61, George Mason 58
WILMINGTON, N.C. — Chad Tomko scored 16 points, Vladimir Kuljanin had 12 points and 17 rebounds and the Seahawks (13-8, 6-3 CAA) beat the Patriots (14-6, 6-3).
Todd Hendley, Daniel Fountain and T.J. Carter each scored 10 points for UNC Wilmington, which used a 13-0 second-half run to take the lead for good.
John Vaughan had 19 points, Folarin Campbell added 17 points and Will Thomas finished with 14 rebounds for George Mason. After the Seahawks’ big run, the Patriots could get no closer than three points — the last time on Campbell’s layup with three seconds left.
George Mason outrebounded UNC Wilmington 33-31, shot 44 percent and allowed the Seahawks to shoot nearly 43 percent. But the Patriots couldn’t get to the free-throw line — UNC Wilmington was 10-for-13 from the line, compared to just 3-for-4 for George Mason.
Holy Cross 66, American 64
Andrew Beinert caught a long rebound and hit a jumper just inside the 3-point line with 18.5 seconds left as the Crusaders (10-8, 1-4 Patriot) avoided their worst league start in nine years with a win over the Eagles (11-9. 3-2) at Bender Arena.
Tim Clifford led Holy Cross with 24 points despite playing the last eight minutes with four fouls. The Crusaders’ Kyle Cruze and Greg McCarthy each added 10.
McCarthy tied the score at 50 when he completed a three-point play with nearly seven minutes remaining, then made a layup to put Holy Cross ahead for the first time since early in the first half.
Garrison Carr scored 17 points to lead American, which has lost eight in a row to Holy Cross. Bryce Simon scored 14 and Brian Gilmore had 10.
Morgan State 69, Howard 51
Jamar Smith scored 26 points to lead the Bears (10-8, 5-1 MEAC) in a win against the Bison (4-15, 1-4). Marquise Kately added 14 points for Morgan State.
Randy Hampton scored 16 and Eugene Myatt had 11 for Howard, which has now lost 11 of its last 12 games. Hampton scored eight of his points at the free throw line, going 8-for-10.
Morgan State never trailed in the game, although they didn’t take complete control until the second half. Leading 29-23 at halftime, the Bears opened the second half with a 16-2 run.
