Three Maryland residents on their way to a dialysis treatment center died yesterday on Interstate 95 north of Baltimore after their van hit the rear of a tractor-trailer.

State police said the early-morning crash, near the Maryland House rest stop in Harford County, killed driver Bonnie J. Hurlbut, 53, of Conowingo; and passengers Damon Brown, 52, and Ralph Biggs, 57, both of Havre de Grace.

Benjamin F. Gilmore, 70, of Aberdeen, another passenger in the 1999 Dodge van, was seriously injured and taken to Bayview Medical Center.

Police said the accident occurred at about 5:45 a.m. in the interstate’s southbound lanes, which caused major delays into Baltimore. The driver of the 1993 Peterbilt tractor-trailer, Ahmad Shivwdayal, 51, said he reduced speed for a slow-moving car ahead of him. He was not injured.

Miss Hurlbut and Mr. Brown were pronounced dead at the scene, Mr. Biggs died at Harford Memorial Hospital shortly after arriving. Police said an autopsy will be performed on Miss Hurlbut’s body.

Officials said the van was owned by Harford County and that the passengers were traveling to a treatment center in the Abingdon area.

Mr. Shivwdayal, of Newark, N.J., was taking a load of trash to Lawrenceville, Va. The truck, which is owned by Golden Eagle Trucking of South Kearney, N.J., was towed and was being examined as evidence.

Witnesses are asked to call 410/537-1150 to speak with the state police, which continues to investigate the accident.
