Nine Virginia Tech players were selected in the NFL Draft this weekend. Quarterback Marcus Vick was not one of them.

Obviously judged to be too much of a risk because of lengthy off-the-field history, Vick was left off some teams' draft boards months ago and was completely passed over in favor of 12 quarterbacks, including two Division I-AA players.

Vick, who started only one season at Virginia Tech, was dismissed from the team Jan. 7, when the school learned he had been arrested and was charged with driving on a suspended or revoked license.

Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs said yesterday the team had no interest in signing Vick as an undrafted free agent.

Asked if he was surprised Vick went undrafted, Gibbs said: "We didn't study him that much because of our situation. ... Maybe it will be best for him. He'll be able to pick his place and go there and have a chance."

Vick, 22, went 11-2 as the Hokies' starter last year and was 177-for-289 passing for 2,393 yards and 17 touchdowns. He added six rushing touchdowns.

Local and regional college players drafted this weekend included:

• Howard: Strong safety Antoine Bethea, seventh round (207th overall), Indianapolis.

• Maryland: Tight end Vernon Davis, first round (sixth), San Francisco; linebacker D'Qwell Jackson, second round (34), Cleveland; cornerback Gerrick McPhearson, seventh round (232), New York Giants.

• Virginia: Offensive tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson, first round (fourth), N.Y. Jets; offensive tackle Brad Butler, fifth round (143), Buffalo; receiver Marques Hagans, fifth round (144), St. Louis; running back Wali Lundy, sixth round (170), Houston; kicker Kurt Smith, sixth round (188), San Diego.
