This editorial is absolutely right on! Please use the free citizen activism tools at NumbersUSA to press for much-needed reforms. As I continue to note, "Attrition through enforcement" is far more humane than our nation's solution to create jobs for American citizens during the Great Depression: Forced repatriation.

WE HAVE BEEN INVADED!!! SOUTHWEST BORDER APPREHENSIONS (Source DHS/CBP) 1987--1,190,488------1995--1,394,554------2003----905,065 1988--1,008,145------1996--1,649,986------2004--1,139,282 1989----954,243------1997--1,412,953------2005--1,189,108 1990--1,169,939------1998--1,555,776------2006--1,071,972 1991--1,197,875------1999--1,537,000------2007----858,638 1992--1,258,482------2000--1,643,679------2008----660,288 (08/31) 1993--1,327,259------2001--1,235,718 1994--1,094,717------2002----929,809 FACT: In the last 22 years, over 26 million illegals, have been apprehended, crossing our Southwest Border. THE PROBLEM IS: Less than 1, out of 4 illegals, were estimated to have been apprehended. Mind boggling, isn't it. According to the U.S. Immigration Service another 6 million illegals in this country are visa overstays. That is, they got a visa legally in their home country, they came here to visit and then they never left. In the last 22 years, there have been another 4 million anchor babies born to illegals. Anchor babies are now being born at a rate of 350-400 thousand per year in our United States. All at our expense!! Then the ANCHOR BABIES qualify for welfare, food stamps, section-8 housing, all at our expense. American Taxpayers are getting screwed, over, and over, and over, again!!!

Many of us certainly DID notice that Immigration issues, especially illegal immigration, was not mentioned during the second debate. It's useless to expect Barack Hussein Obama to discuss ways to eliminate illegal immigration; the Democrats pander to our Hispanic citizens by actively seeking more of the same. Hispanics tend to register and vote Democrat because Republicans want to put an end to illegal immigration, which is indeed a threat to our national security, besides overburdening our communities, schools, welfare, medical, and court systems. But I was syrprised that John McCain did not mention it. McCain needs to place the emphasis squarely on this issue again. He once said he'd "got the message" that Americans want an end to this invasion from across our southern border. He should now stress his willingness to commit the federal government's resources to accomplishing this goal if elected president.

You write: "Illegal immigrants are also employed in the blue-collar production and service sectors, which have also been effected.". I believe you might have confused the word "effected" for "affected". Surprising given this is an Editorial and not simply a news story.

The biggest incentive that needs to be gotten rid of is the incentive to come to America as an illegal and have children here that are then considered "citizens". This "citizenship" then entitles illegals to taxpayer provided services through their children. This scam has to end, no more anchor babies.

New Study Link Illegal Immigration and Crime October, 2008 Phoenix, Arizona: Based on 2007 criminal conviction statistics: Illegal immigrants account for 34% of the drug convictions; 44% of forgery; 96% of smuggling; 85% of false ID; 50% of crimes related to “chop shops”; 36% of kidnappings; 21% of crimes committed with weapons; 13% of aggravated assaults; 13% of robberies; 13% of stolen cars; 10% of sex crimes; 11% of murders and 20% of the felony DUI convictions in the Phoenix area. Illegal immigrants make up 19 percent of those convicted of crimes in Maricopa County and 21 percent of those in county jails. Illegal immigrants only make up an estimated 9 percent of the county’s population. It is estimated that each violent crime cost citizens $20,000, and each property crime cost citizens $4363 per offense. All the more a concern is research that finds the likelihood of an illegal immigrant being incarcerated grows with longer residence in the United States and that the U.S. born children (considered citizens) of illegal immigrants are dramatically more likely to be involved in crime than their illegal immigrant parents. For instance, native born Hispanic male high school dropouts are eleven times more likely to be incarcerated than their foreign born counterparts.

An excellent editorial. However, the Editors have fallen into the trap of the long-outdated and under-counted Pew figures. Using 2004 data, Bear Sterns Report of January 2005 stated they found the number of illegals in the U.S. to be 20 million. Time Magazine stated in 2005 that 5 million illegals broke into the U.S. in one year. Finally, last October, CAPS did a panel study on numbers of illegals and found the figure to be between 20 and 38 million, with most of the panelists believing the higher figure. The CAPS Report can be seen at http://www.capsweb.org/content.php?id=57&menu_id=8

re:how illegal immigration hurts our national security and threatens our economy-- What kind of damage to national security do you think could be possible if it were possible for an illegal immigrant to pass himself off as a citizen and become the President of the United States? http://www.obamacrimes.com/attachments/028_Obama,%20Motion%20for%20Leave%20and%20First%20Amended%20Complaint.pdf

We are allowing the government to frame the immigration problem for us. We must consider that in some cases, such as here, the government is not acting in our own individual best interest. Thus, the term "illegal" associated with "alien" or "immigrant" is one of the government's invention. What we as individuals must do is look at the problem from our own perspective. It is my understanding that this has not been done very often and has not been heralded very effectively. The reality is that foreign nationals are in every recognized nation worldwide, creating a nearly fully integrated polyglot. To somehow require all these people to get their "papers in order" with respect to the local laws of each country is crazy. There has to be a better, more accommodating, and global solution. Like a national identity card that is accepted worldwide. This different than a passport and should be a smart card with various data on it relevant to the bearer and the country he or she hails from. Take a look at the end-to-end treatment of the immigration problem that has been prepared by Trigon-International, Inc. This is actionable, affordable, and feasible and more aptly it addresses the problem in situ meaning that the fix goes in without having to reset the pieces on the game board.
