FIRST QUARTER
What happened: The Giants took the opening kickoff and drove 84 yards in 11 plays for a 7-0 lead as Plaxico Burress caught three passes for 60 yards and Fred Smoot was flagged for pass interference in the end zone. The Redskins went three and out after Justin Tuck sacked Jason Campbell on first down. The Giants moved on the ground inside the Washington 10 but settled for a field goal. The Redskins again failed to move the ball, gaining a first down only with a roughing-the-kicker penalty.
Analysis: The Super Bowl champs dominated on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Eli Manning and Burress shredded a Redskins secondary missing cornerback Shawn Springs, a late scratch. The Giants made a point at running at defensive end Jason Taylor, a game-time decision to play despite a sore knee. Campbell was hounded by the Giants' pass rush, supposedly weakened by retirement and injury, and the Redskins' running game did little.
