Using overseas aid to encourage democratic change is a very good thing. Forming mutual defence alliances with countries that we have neither the means or desire to sacrifice the lives of our young soldiers to protect is a very bad idea. The Russians know full well that unlike France, Britain, Poland, and Hungary - core members of the Western community - Georgia has never been a country that our democratic allies in Europe have seen as part of their community. Ditto, the Ukraine. That is why they are vetoeing Georgian membership of NATO.
We should however encourage democracy in Georgia. The present gent whose hot-headedness got his country into its present mess stole the last election by Mugabe-like strong-arm tactics that would have embarassed even Putin. Let the Ruskies have him.
