The Metropolitan Police Department said Sunday Joseph Mays, 44, has been charged in connection with a triple homicide in Northeast.

Authorities said Mr. Mays was apprehended Saturday, after police found a woman and two boys possible killed in a domestic dispute at the Northeast apartment, in the 2000 block of Maryland Avenue, in the Trinidad neighborhood.

Mr. Mays is charged with three counts of first-degree murder while armed.

Erika Peters, 37, and a boy were found dead in the apartment. The other child was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

An unharmed 2-year-old girl was removed from the apartment.

Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier said the girl is the daughter of Miss Peters and Mr. Mays. She said the boys, 8 and 10, were Miss Peters’ from a previous relationship. Chief Lanier also said authorities are awaiting a medical examiner’s report to determine the causes of death.
