The Obama administration said Monday a preliminary report shows the federal Recovery Act has created or saved at least 250,000 education jobs across the country.

The report being released by the White House’s Domestic Policy Council — in cooperation with the Education Department — shows money from the $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act has enabled states to cover nearly all of their projected education-budget shortfalls for fiscal 2009 and 2010.

The administration said the layoffs were averted from local school districts and universities.

The preliminary results came from states and the final numbers will be posted Oct. 30.

“There is a lot more work to be done, but we applaud those districts that have successfully used stimulus funding to stave off catastrophic layoffs and invest in critical reforms,” Education Secretary Arne Duncan said.

President Obama signed the bill into law on Feb. 17 to help the country recover from a deep recession. The act creates jobs and provides tax relief to individuals and businesses, according to the administration.
