After the tragic bus crash in Stafford County, Virginia, that claimed five lives, the victims’ families should pursue legal action against the bus company and the state of New York (“Bus driver charged with manslaughter in deadly collision on I-95 in Virginia,” Web, May 31).

It is deeply concerning that the bus driver charged with involuntary manslaughter in the collision does not speak English. It raises critical questions about his training and how he secured a commercial driver’s license in the first place.

Although New York previously allowed CDL testing in multiple languages, federal law demands English proficiency for commercial operators. Language barriers may have played a devastating role in this tragedy, and New York must be held accountable for its dangerous lapse in enforcement.
