Another voice on the QB selection

Before I went to bed, wanted to give everyone a brief preview of tomorrow's dead-tree edition story.

It's different than the online-only story. Much different.

I talked with John Turner, the father of Chris Turner, earlier today. It was a brief but cordial conversation, and the guy was clearly stunned his son didn't get the Terrapins' job over Jordan Steffy.

"We are shellshocked," John Turner said. "We'll probably talk about some things tonight, but right now we're shellshocked."

And, really, if you assumed the decision would be heavily influenced by last year's performance, you can't take issue with that insight. It's safe to say a lot of Maryland fans are feeling something rather similar right now.

John Turner didn't want to discuss much else, and that was probably wise of him. "Much else" would, of course, include the possibility of a transfer. Of course, that leaves that possibility on the table at this juncture.

I thought I'd do an extensive rundown of the stats by quarterback from last season. Seemed like a reasonable thing, even if it cost me way too much time. Waaay too much. But if I can't produce practice stats, I can surely put together something from all the data gleaned from last fall:

Well, now. That's a lot of data to digest, and it should probably be considered that Steffy benefitted from a healthy offensive line and games against a decent Division I-AA team and awful Florida International, while Turner played a little more than three quarters behind a fully functional offensive line.

The various subplots stemming from this decision aren't disappearing anytime soon, but it's time to get some rest. But this should at least provide about a lucid a look back at 2007 as there is possible.

And with these numbers from actual games, there's probably reason for more than just John Turner to be a little shellshocked.

Patrick, Fantastic chart and information. Thanks for having the best news paper coverage on the Terps. Don't know what Fridge and Franklin are thinking here...can you fax over that chart to Fridge for us Terps fans?

Homer--- They've got their own set of stats that the team alone is completely privy to. I just figured I'd better offer up whatever I could muster from last year. That said, I'd bet they knew much of this data as well. Maybe not all, but certainly a very healthy majority of it. Fact is, this call was based on practice performance in April and August and not in games last fall. And no chart of any size was going to change that.

The thing is, any Joe Blow can make this decision without even SEEING the stats. All they had to do was watch the game and see how each QB reacted/played when the other team was bearing down on them. Jordan folds or panics. Chris stands in there and will deliver the ball whether or not he takes a hit. That sort of thing can't be measured, and that type of intangible is a BIG reason why MD fans are so upset (including myself).

Sam--- Put yourself in Ralph's spot. You declare an open competition, and one guy does better than the other. How do you look to your team if you don't choose the guy that performed the best? It's a classic credibility gap, except Ralph now finds himself burning things on two ends --- with his players, who he dares not alienate, and with his fan base, which is pouring more of its disposable income into his program than ever before. On the surface, it seems like a baffling call, based on how Steffy and Turner played in games last year. But as soon as Ralph declared an open race in the spring (to go along with hiring a new offensive coordinator), the dynamic shifted away past performance. A lot of people are ripping Friedgen's decision, and last year's data says it isn't the right call. But if he and Franklin are to be believed (and I don't see any reason for them to say they chose the guy who practiced the worst), then the decision angry fans should really question is opening up the competition in the first place. This month finalized the Terps' initial choice at QB, but the possibility it could actually unfold the way it did was created much earlier in the year.

their practice stats are meaningless since the yellow (can't be hit) jersey is on also, steffy checks down because he can't see downfield (too short) so the defenders creep up - where is the pick 6 stat? also, what about fumbling the first snap against wvu? finally, turner gets off twice as many throws as steffy without a sack-amazing difference

Ridiculous. The fact is Turner brings excitement and composure not seen since scott mcbrien. Franklin will last one year.
