Maryland played two JV games last year, both heading into a bye week.

So it didn't seem like much of a stretch to look up, say, Fork Union Military Academy's schedule to see if the Terrapins popped up.

Sure enough, there's a date set in College Park on Oct. 26.

So I asked Ralph Friedgen about it. And deep down, I knew there was one position that concerned him: Quarterback.

After all, Chris Turner won't play in that game. It would make no sense to burn a redshirt of either C.J. Brown or Danny O'Brien.

That leaves Jamarr Robinson. And that's it.

Or is it?

"I have a secret weapon," Friedgen said. "I still have [Anthony] Green. We'll run the Wildcat offense."

Green, a defensive back, moved over to offense and played quarterback in the spring. Green's the chatty sort, and seeing him back under center (and talking about it afterward) is entertaining by itself.

Another sliver of value comes from the fact Lorne Goree and David Mackall --- a pair of guys who signed with Maryland last February --- will attend Fork Union this fall.

And then there's the main purpose, which is to give the scout team guys who have already redshirted something to look forward to besides yet another week of practice.

"The game costs me some money and it's a little bit of a pain, but from what I saw last year, the kids really enjoyed it," Friedgen said. "They had fun. We played the first one after the Virginia game and I really wasn't in a good mood. I went out there and I just saw them having fun."

Chances are, Friedgen will have even more fun this year if the varsity is coming off a victory at Duke two days earlier.
