McCain's charge 'sheiky'

By Stephen Dinan on July 25, 2008 into Dinan

For the second time this week, John McCain and his campaign have accused Barack Obama of a war strategy that would have endangered Sunni sheiks in Iraq who were key to the awakening that's been credited with quelling al Qaeda violence in Anbar province.

The only problem is that Abdul Sattar Abu Risha, a key sheik the U.S. based its strategy on, was killed in September, well after the surge began, and it did not end the awakening. And the Sunni Awakening in Anbar, as it's come to be called, began months before President Bush announced the surge.

The whole flap started after McCain, in an interview with CBS, got the time line wrong on the awakening, crediting the surge with creating the conditions for it. In the days since, McCain instead has tacked to try to claim the surge preserved the awakening — and pointing to keeping the sheiks alive as a key piece of evidence.

Here is McCain from his prepared remarks in Denver today: "If Senator Obama had prevailed, American forces would have had to retreat under fire. The Iraqi Army would have collapsed. Civilian casualties would have increased dramatically. Al Qaeda would have killed the Sunni sheikhs who had begun to cooperate with us, and the 'Sunni Awakening' would have been strangled at birth. Al Qaeda fighters would have safe havens, from where they could train Iraqis and foreigners, and turn Iraq into a base for launching attacks on Americans elsewhere. Civil war, genocide and wider conflict would have been likely."

And here was McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds earlier this week:

"Democrats can debate whether the Awakening would have survived without the surge, or whether the Shiite militias would have unilaterally disarmed without US troops and our Iraqi allies disarming them by force, but that is a transparent effort to minimize the role of our commanders and our troops in defeating the enemy, because to credit them would be to disparage the judgment of Barack Obama and praise the leadership of John McCain.

"If Barack Obama had had his way, the Sheiks who started the Awakening would have been murdered at the hands of al Qaeda, and US forces would have already left Iraq in defeat."

The overall success of the surge is now apparent, but it's tough to argue Obama's plan would have led to the death of sheiks when they're dying anyway. While it wasn't in Anbar province, another pro-American Sunni leader was killed just this week.

Who cares about the timing. The truth is without the "Surge" we would still be suffering from more car bombings, road side bombs (IED's,) sectarian violence and possible uncontrolled civil war. Picky, picky, picky, that's all the Hussein camp can do. The Commander in Chief of the world does'nt even have time to visit our wounded troops, what a shame.

America--you need to choose! Don't buy into their fear machine. McCain does not put his country first, he puts his play for power first and that is squarely in the back-pockets of lobbyists. Obama's position has not changed. He will pull out our troops RESPONSIBLY. Unlike the REPUBLICANS who got us into this money pit. McCain will begin paying for this war by denying American citizens the federal funds that they have paid into. But paying for mercenary soldiers at three times what our service men and women make is OK? Sure, as long as we vote to stop expanded benefits for our beloved soldiers, neglect VA hospitals, ignore healthcare and our crumbling infrastructure and siphon our tax dollars to KBR and Blackwater. This mess was made by REPUBLICANS exploiting our national tragedy by claiming that anyone who did not go along with their LIES FOR A WAR OF CHOICE were unpatriotic. To think that more of the McSame would be good for America is to sell out your country. This would be a dangerous road to go down. You are talking about TRUSTING individuals who lied us into war. And if your of the mind to say that Mccain is not the same as Bush, then why does he have the same people running his campaign? Republican leadership is corrupt. They have proven it again and again. Watergate; Iran/Contra; Savings and Loans; Keating Five, Abramoff, subprime loans, the list goes on and on. What about DeLay's corruption; how about Frist; Libby; and yes, what about Cheney? How much evidence do you all need? McCain voted AGAINST waterboarding being designated as torture; AGAINST the new and improved GI bill; he plans on reducing the deficit by halting earmarks, when earmarks fund our infrastructure! Yes, our hard earned tax dollars can pour into Halliburton/KBR and Blackwater, but our bridges--no way! Open your eyes. I believe that it is essential for our new president to build bridges and repair our standing with the international community. I do not think that you can do that with jokes about bombing another country; bomb-bomb Iran. McCain standing in the CHEESE isle and in front of the "Fudge Haus" as he lectures Obama in his grumpy paternalistic way, says it all to me. McCain is all lies and lacks the cogent fortitude to string together 5 sentences for the press, how is he going to put together a plan for the 21st century? I'll tell you how--corporate puppet masters. Do you want a competent 21st century leader (one that can log himself on), or a puppet? Your choice. PLEASE AMERICA, please, please, please, don't blow it a third time. A tree will be known by his fruit.

SouthPrairieDeb: Now here we have a genuine, unmitigated left wing nut. Deb wake up and get real, all your arguments went out with the Ford Model T. Since the Republicans are so corrupt, have we forgotten the Clinton years, which certainly was no paragon of honesty and morals. Bomb, bomb, bomb Iran before they nuke, nuke, nuke us. Wake up Ded the world is not a friendly face.

Regardless of the impact on Sunni's or Shi'ites, politics is not the issue with the impact, the key here is the surge. Has it worked? If it hasn't worked then why is Obama supporting pulling out the troops in 16 month's and leaving Iraq vulnerable? If it has worked then how can he deny it as a reason to pull out the troops and sending them to Afghanistan? It wasn't his previous or recent visit or his failure statements that reduced the violence. It was the determination and blood of Americans and Iraqi's fighting together.

I'm voting for Constitution Party Presidential candidate Chuck Baldwin (www.baldwin08.com) because I believe he's the best person to help solve our problems especially the economy and Iraq War. Michael B. Rockville, Maryland

Dinan is saying because one sheik’s death didn’t stop the awakening’s success, the surge wasn’t necessary. That’s like a football coach saying because he gave up one touchdown and still won, he didn’t really need his defensive line.

Dear Mr. Dinan, You could not be more mistaken. I suggest you review the following URL: http://www.mudvillegazette.com/archives/030597.html The actual situation was made quite clear at the time by Iraqis.
