Wounded vets walk out during inaugural ball concert

An inaugural ball honoring U.S. military veterans ended in a kerfluffle as several veterans walked out when a musical act's attempt at humor backfired.

During the Heroes Red, White & Blue Inaugural Ball honoring the nation's veterans, a vocalist with George Clinton and the P. Funk All-Stars held up a white towel with large block letters saying "[Expletive] GEORGE," perturbing many audience members who walked out after the display, interpreting it as a jab at the outgoing commander-in-chief, George W. Bush.

A spokeswoman for the ball's organizers said the sign was inappropriate.

"Obviously we and the Heroes Ball coordinators were unaware that the sign existed and did not support their actions, especially considering our non-partisan mission and treasured military audience," said ball spokeswoman Carrie Foster.

But a spokesman for the band, the final act to perform, said the sign was intended to poke fun at their leader, who shares the same first name as Bush.

"George's guys always have always had a thing about the four-letter-word," said band spokesman Sandy Friedman. "It was directed to George Clinton. There was no last name, it was to George, the leader of the band."

Friedman said people had been walking out on various acts throughout the evening and that there was no noticeable mass exodus after the sign was unveiled. However, one fellow band member seemed to notice people walking out and quickly ripped the sign down.

The audience at the Warner Theater in downtown D.C. included wounded young veterans wearing slings, walking with canes and nursing other visible wounds. Some 300 military service men and women from Walter Reed Hospital and their families were invited. The sweat-pants and bandana sporting members of the funk band were in sharp contrast with the sparkling ball gowns, tuxedos and sharp military uniforms.

The towel incident was a hiccup in an otherwise smooth and glamorous evening. Guests on hand to thank the veterans included Larry King, Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and USO President Elaine Rodgers.

...also attending the ball to honor our troops (and having a dance with 'GI Joe and Jane') were President and Michelle Obama.

You are wrong. The Obamas did NOT show up at the Heroes ball.

A hiccup? I've had the hiccups and they were nothing like that.

This was the first time that an incoming president snubbed the Hero's Ball since 1952. Obama is a disgrace.

It's about what one would expect from a group called p-funk.

This ball was a disaster, I don't blame people for walking out (we did!) and I feel really bad for anyone who traveled to DC, bought a tux / gown, and paid $800 for a ticket to attend it. The food was lame and portions stingy. People who entered from the theatre side were not properly directed to the party area (our group of 25 missed the entire pre-concert party). The talent backed out of the concert. The ticket agency did not pair the seats correctly. The open bars ran out of mixers immediately at the after party (!) But most of all I feel sorry for the troops, because they got a lousy ball, and they all looked terrifc in their dress uniforms. I swear the servicemen's dates were hotter than the celebs we saw at the Google ball!

Disgusting behavior by delusional fools that put their own agenda above serving our service men and women, many of whom had been wounded in combat, defending the rights of the fools to do what they do best - be delusional fools....

@getgoodusa I recall a scene when Bush was touring through Walter Reid a reporter commented to a wounded soldier, I bet this doesn't happen often, the reply was, Oh he comes here all the time, but you reporters don't. I guess Obama is like the reporters, he showed up for the CnC Ball which honored him, but not the Heros Ball, he had more important things to do, places to be and people to be with than a bunch of aging heros. Maybe instead of BEING a disgrace, he just acted disgracefully? If not then answer me this? Why did he not follow the tradition of EVERY American President since this event was first started? and as I recall 4 of THEM were Democrats.

What happened to "Manners"? Their man is in the White House now and they continue their trash. It really is inexcusable behavior of the left and I wonder why we don't call them on this behavior. Ann Coulter does and her voice is hated by the left. Too bad it's only her voice.

again people.....who is surprised by this behavior??? King Hussein Obama has the same distaste for the armed services that Slick Willie has/does. Ditto for Hillary the Hun. Answer me a simple question: Who (in BO's camp) has attempted an apology to the troops? I wait...........

Mmmmmmmmmmm...somehow, I don't buy the excuse given by the band. Especially not after all the sickening displays I heard about Tuesday in DC towards the former president. It was a low moment to our country's history in what was supposed to be a very high point. Disgusting

Why is anyone surprised? When you invite a herd of pigs to a tea dance, you can anticipate having mud on the carpets at the end of the night. Leadership starts at the top and flows down the chain of command.

The phrase "their man is in the White House" means nothing more than the Democrat's man is in the White House! This story and the comments are not about skin color! It is about insulting and dishonoring people of any color. The next thing we know is some racist will insist that the White House will have to be called the Black House. Disgusting and so very childish!

After more than 22 years of service in the military, this doesn't surprise me. I walked the streets of the good old USA during the Viet Nam era and got jeered and spit on. Liberals will never learn. Pity we can't teach common sense to every citizen. This incident is just further proof that we're going to hell in a handbasket. Thank God for veterans. Pray for the future.
