Redskins 53-man projection

By Ryan O'Halloran on Sept. 1, 2009 into Redskins 360

Greetings from Redskin Park, where Your Team takes the field at 11 a.m. for a 75-minute practice. They finish the preseason Thursday night in Jacksonville.

The roster is currently at 75. Here's another guess at how the 53-man roster will look.

Using last year's Week 17 roster as a gauge, I used 25 offensive players, 25 defensive players and three specialists.

OFFENSE

Quarterbacks (3)

Jason Campbell, Todd Collins and Colt Brennan. I give Brennan the slight edge over rookie Chase Daniel because he's more familiar with the system.

Running backs (5)

Clinton Portis, Ladell Betts, Rock Cartwright, Anthony Alridge and Mike Sellers. The surprise addition is Alridge. Even though he missed the first two preseason games, I stuck him on the roster after a coach told me, "He's Vinny's guy," referring to Cerrato claiming Alridge off waivers this off season.

Tight ends (3)

Chris Cooley, Todd Yoder and Fred Davis. The easiest position to project.

Receivers (5)

Santana Moss, Antwaan Randle El, Devin Thomas, Malcolm Kelly and Marko Mitchell. I had Marques Hagans on the roster at the start of camp but he did nothing and was cut this week.

Offensive line (9)

Casey Rabach, Chris Samuels, Derrick Dockery, Randy Thomas, Stephon Heyer, Will Montgomery, Chad Rinehart, Mike Williams and Jeremy Bridges. The final roster last year had 10 OL.

DEFENSE

Defensive line (9)

Albert Haynesworth, Cornelius Griffin, Andre Carter, Phillip Daniels, Anthony Montgomery, Kedric Golston, Jeremy Jarmon, Lorenzo Alexander and Renaldo Wynn. The odd guys out are Alex Buzbee and Rob Jackson.

Linebackers (7)

London Fletcher, Rocky McIntosh, Brian Orakpo, H.B. Blades, Robert Thomas, Chris Wilson and Cody Glenn.

Defensive backs (9)

Carlos Rogers, DeAngelo Hall, Fred Smoot, Justin Tryon, Kevin Barnes, LaRon Landry, Chris Horton, Reed Doughty and Kareem Moore. Moore's hamstring injury could impact whether an extra safety is kept for the first few weeks.

Specialists (3)

Hunter Smith, Ethan Albright and Shaun Suisham. The kicker battle rages on and I think if it's a tie, Suisham gets the nod over Dave Rayner.

RO'H - I'm mostly with ya... how are these for "buts"... Zorn's comments on Colt are never positive and indicate he's not sold on his ability to take to coaching... his comments on Chase are just the opposite... add in age, Colt 26, Chase 23, and it's Chase with the better long-term potential, even as just a back-up... Flexibility of having 95 and 98 as LB/DE hybrids allows the team to dump Wynn, creating an additional roster space, probably on another LB... 53 or 58 make the team... I'm with you everywhere else... I feel the Skin's love 39's speed... and since he was recommended by Shanahan, that carry's more weight come 2010... hmmm? Practice Squad... Agnone, Holmes, Dixon and two from the waiver wire. This is more fun than watching the pre-season games themselves!
