Maryland quarterback Jordan Steffy could miss at least a month from the effects of a concussion, coach Ralph Friedgen said.
Steffy, who has yet to be cleared by the Terrapins’ medical personnel, was injured Sept. 29 at Rutgers. Steffy also suffered a concussion in a 2004 game at Virginia Tech.
“It could be a while with Jordan,” Friedgen said. “They think from the injury it could be a month. We’ll see. You don’t know on the concussions. They’re just kind of basing that off of where he was with the last one.”
In Steffy’s absence, sophomore Chris Turner has led the Terps (4-2, 1-1 ACC) to consecutive victories over Rutgers and Georgia Tech. Maryland has this week off.
Friedgen said Steffy, who did not participate in the drills open to media yesterday, would undergo more tests tomorrow. If Steffy sits for a month, he would miss games against Virginia and Clemson.
“We’ll have to play that by ear,” Friedgen said. “He thinks he’s getting better. He’s shown some improvement on the test, but they’re going to need a lot more to be cleared.”
Meanwhile, guard Andrew Crummey’s broken left fibula was not as damaged as expected, and he could return for the Terps’ finale. Defensive tackle Travis Ivey has medial collateral ligament damage in his right knee and will miss at least four to six weeks. If he undergoes surgery, he will be lost for the season.
Linebacker Erin Henderson (knee) has a chance to return against Virginia, while linebacker Rick Costa (neck) is expected to miss two to three weeks and won’t return until at least the Oct. 27 Clemson game.
Friedgen said linebacker Dave Philistin (shoulder) and cornerback Kevin Barnes (neck) are hampered by nagging injuries but should not miss any time. Linebacker Chase Bullock (sprained ankle) is also expected to return for the Virginia game.
